We probably hovered in that one spot for 15 minutes taking in the wall, the surrounding landscape, and the fish overhead. The visibility was steller (20+ m). We could see ripples on the surface from the bottom (33 m). Saw a sheepshead which looked a lot like Victor, but he would have been pretty far from home. Dodged a hailstorm of jellies on the safety stop (ID help: they looked just like egg-yolk jellies but the oral arms were white instead of yellow/orange). One of them had a long Siphonophore wrapped around it, although it looked like it was part of the jelly.

I counted at least 30 specimens in a band along the bottom of the rock between 30 and 35 m (100-115 ft).

The anchorage is in a sand channel to the east of the top of the rock at about 32 m (105 ft) (N 36 31.460, W 121 56.540) while the top of the pinnacle is about 22 m (72 ft) (maybe N 36 31.460, W 121 56.570). Visually, the anchorage is 200 degrees from the horn on Guillemot Rock and 120 degrees from the outermost rock at Cannery Point. Paul, evidently disgusted by the conditions, turned around but Scott B. and I continued. Moments later the visibility opened up and we saw metridiums, a 6" red abalone, cowry, spanish shawl (my first), a small chain (although not something you want to lock your bike with as the links were one inch thick) and a larger chain with two inch links. The fog had completely burned off by 9. Almost no surge in the shallows, none at depth. Water was cooler than last weekend 11-12 C. At 14-17 m, the awful 2-3 m viz close to shore opened up to more like 20 m. My buddy, Frank, and I emerged from both dives with huge grins on our faces.

The kelp forest and reef in front of the Aquarium is absolutely magic.
Tons of metridiums were feeding. Also seen were a huge ling, chestnut
cowries, Hermissenda, Spanish shawl, sea hare, a couple of fair sized abalone, some large rockfish guarding a 5 m salp. There was also a large school of something I hadn't seen before: it was the shape and size of a surf perch, but it was completely silver.

On the first dive, we swam to the reef underwater to and fro. We did the surface swim on the second dive, to maximize our time on the reef. If you stay close to shore, you can avoid the thick kelp.

145 11 July 2006 10:49 Monterey, CA / Cannery Point Wall 25.4 m 54 min Stellar dive with huge viz. Mostly ignored the small stuff and checked out the kelp and rockfish and sun streaming through.

Explored cove behind Cannery Point Wall. Could see the blue water of Bluefish Cove over shallows where Scott spotted the huge head of what must have been a huge ling cod. Most of cove about 5 m. Then dropped over and swam out along wall and then back to sand channel.

Got a bit disoriented and a bit anxious. Was warm, maybe narced; stressor was a bit of condensation in mask and wondering where the sand channel was. Had to surface to check (1 min from 10 m to surface).

Dropped at end of Middle Reef. Scott had trouble clearing so I blew smoke rings at the bottom while I waited. Went around nose, crossed over to Granite Point Wall, at Seal Cove crossed back to Middle Reef and back sand channel along reef.

After shuttling divers, Glenn and I found a hole on the kelp to anchor between Thumb's Up and Monastery in the corner where the kelp turns to the east. We started to the NW through narrow swimthroughs. Ling cod, corynactus, one large hydrocoral garden on the tip. Dark kelp forest. Interesting topagraphy.

Beautiful, hot day.

Nice to dive without BC.

Snorkeled topside and used scuba for keel, prop, and tiller.

154 2 August 2006 10:51 Monterey, CA / Middle Reef 9.2 m 26 min Lori's first Monterey dive!

Met Scott Brown in line who gave Lori refresher yesterday and Phil Sammet who talked about the process of planning the dive of the wrecked barge which made the front page of the Chronicle this week. Later, Glenn Davis rolled up.

Short dive since Lori used lots of air to test weighting, because this was new--and cold.

Swam out half-way in the sand channel and dropped at 5 m and then swam out a bit.

155 3 August 2006 14:12 Monterey, CA / Middle Reef 17.0 m 32 min Lori's first Monterey dive!

Todd, driving Glenn's boat, droppped us off near end of Middle Reef.

Took a while to get down because Lori hanging on to kelp with left hand making it hard to add air to BC.

Saw a nice wall on reef, swam across sand channel to see kelp, swim- throughs, and stuff. Swam up sand channel until viz droppped and Lori out of air, and cold.

Good dive for Lori.

Nice, mellow dive after a long break.
Plenty of air and bottom time left; got cold.

Blew off second dive and went whale watching. Mom and calf breacing, nearly out of the water. Got close enough to hear them breathe. Very cool. Overcast, but welcome flat seas.
